When you think of the Italian language, Italy is likely the first place that comes to mind. However, Italian is spoken in several other countries around the world
Is Italian a hard language to learn? Discover why it’s actually easy (more or less)
The short answer is no, it is not considered hard at all. In fact, many people think it is quite easy, especially if you already know another language like French or Spanish.
However, when we talk about languages, it is not correct to say that one language is only easy or only hard. Every language has some parts that are simple and some parts that are more difficult. It also depends on the person. For example, if you already know English or another European language, Italian can feel easier for you.
There are many things that make Italian easy to learn. First, the sounds are mostly clear and regular. In Italian, you usually read words the same way you write them. Only a few sounds, like gli and gn, may feel a bit strange at the beginning, but with practice they become easier.
Another reason why Italian is easy is that many words are similar to English words. This is because the two languages share some common origins. For example, family in English is famiglia in Italian, important is importante, and information is informazione. When you see these words, you can often understand them even if you are still a beginner, and this makes learning much faster.
If you think that learning Italian has no challenges, you may be disappointed. There are some aspects of the language that many learners struggle with. Here are the most common ones:
Probably the most difficult part is gender. In Italian, every noun is masculine or feminine. For example, book (libro) is masculine, but house (casa) is feminine.
The challenge is that every word connected to the noun, like articles, adjectives, and sometimes verbs, must change to match the gender and the number (singular or plural). This means you have to remember more forms.
For example, the good boy is il bravo ragazzo, but the good girl is la brava ragazza. In the plural, they change again.
Verbs are another difficult part. Italian verbs change a lot. This is called conjugation. The ending of the verb changes for each person: I, you, he, we, and so on.
For example, the verb to speak (parlare) becomes parlo, parli, parla, parliamo, parlate, parlano.
There are also many tenses, like present, past, and future, and each one has different forms. You need time and practice to learn them well, even if some tenses, like passato remoto or trapassato prossimo, are rarely used today.
In English, the subjunctive is not used very much anymore, but in Italian, it is used often, especially after expressions of opinion, feelings, or doubt.
This can feel new and confusing for learners. You need to learn when to use it and how to form it.Italian also has some particular pronouns that can be tricky. These are ci, ne, and si. They have many meanings and uses, and they are sometimes difficult to translate into English.
For example, ci can mean there, but it can also be part of a verb. Ne can mean of it or from there. Because of this, these words can be difficult to understand at first.
In short, even if there are some difficulties, Italian remains one of the easiest languages for English learners. You can learn it in a short time if you study a little every day and practice often.
