The Italian Future Tense

The future tense, or tempo futuro, is used to describe actions that will take place in the future or to make predictions. It corresponds to the English simple future (e.g., I will go) or the "going to" construction.

Domani andrò a Roma.

Tomorrow, I will go to Rome.

Tra un po' pioverà.

It will rain shortly.

Più tardi pulirò casa.

Later, I will clean the house.

Using Present Tense for Future Events

In spoken Italian, it's common to use the present tense to refer to future events.

Domani vado a Roma – Tomorrow I go to Rome (instead of Domani andrò a Roma)
La lezione inizia tra un'ora – The lesson starts in an hour (instead of La lezione inizierà tra un'ora)
Stasera torno a casa alle otto – Tonight I return home at eight (instead of Stasera tornerò a casa alle otto)
Oggi cucino la cena – Today I cook dinner (instead of Oggi cucinerò la cena)

Conjugation of the Future Tense

To form the future tense for regular verbs, remove the final -e from the infinitive and add the appropriate future endings. For -are verbs, change the final a to e.

-ARE Verbs

For verbs that take -isc- in the present tense, the future tense does not include -isc-.

Verbs Ending in -CIARE or -GIARE

Verbs ending in -ciare or -giare lose the final i in the future tense.

Negative Sentences

To form negative sentences in the future tense, simply place non before the verb.

Questa sera non uscirò.

Tonight, I will not go out.

Quest'anno non andrò in vacanza al mare, andrò in montagna.

This year, I will not go on vacation to the sea; I will go to the mountains.

Non riusciremo ad arrivare in tempo.

We will not manage to arrive on time.

Other Uses of the Future Tense

In addition to describing future actions, the future tense can also be used to express uncertainty or speculation.

Ci saranno venti persone nella stanza.

There will be twenty people in the room.

Questa borsa costerà sui cinquanta euro.

This bag will cost around fifty euros.

Marco non risponde al telefono, sarà occupato.

Marco isn't answering the phone; he must be busy.

L'autobus non è ancora arrivato, sarà in ritardo.

The bus has not arrived yet; it must be late.

Anna avrà quarant'anni.

Anna will be forty years old.

Irregular Verbs in the Future

Some verbs are irregular in the future tense. These verbs change their root or stem, but take the same future endings as regular verbs.

Stare per + Infinitive

The expression stare per followed by a verb in the infinitive indicates that something is about to happen.

Sta per piovere.

It’s about to rain.

Il film sta per cominciare.

The movie is about to start.

Io e la mia famiglia stiamo per partire per le vacanze.

My family and I are about to leave for vacation.

Il treno sta per partire.

The train is about to depart.

Sto per andare al lavoro.

I’m about to go to work.

Some verbs are irregular in the future tense. These verbs change their root or stem, but take the same future endings as regular verbs.
